Corona Impact on the Alleppey house boat industry.

The COVID-19 pandemic has impacted on the tourism industry due to the resulting travel restrictions put forth by all the nation across the globe. The Govt announced that there is a loss of 15000cr lose due to lockdown alone in Kerala.

Out of this loss a major portion would be from the Alleppey house boat industry.  More than 1000s of house boats are docked or with no service for almost 7 months.  Things are bad for the owners and the workers. The idle situation will result in so much overhead expense for the boat owner to get boats back to track to welcome the new guest. Financial assistance to house boat entrepreneurs were proposed by the Govt to help the house boat industry to recover from the pandemic. The grants for repair and maintenance will be provided in 3 categories of 80000, 100000,120000 respectively. Also govt has approved for a tourism support scheme which will through the online portal system.

Meanwhile in April District Collector M Anjana said that houseboats in the districts may be turned into COVID-19 isolation wards if the need arises.

After months of waiting the tourism and house boat industry is open and looking forward to revive back to its glory.
